Burundi Gahahe Kayanza

Burundi Gahahe Kayanza
Notes: Deep notes of brown sugar & cocoa with a winey acidity and sparkly sweetness
Process: Natural
Cup: Microlot
Size: 12oz
ETC… This mircolot is harvested by local farmers from the area surrounding the Gahahe washing station in the Kayanza region of Burundi. Each producer farms only about 11 hectares of land (¼ of an acre) and is reliant on the sale of their coffee for their livelihood. Because producers in this small country - barely the size of Maryland – farm on such small plots of land themselves, mircolots are near impossible to source from a single producer or single farm. Instead, they are selected from the daylots at washing stations based on cup quality with only the highest scoring beans earning the title of “microlot”.
Sourcing coffee from Burundi is difficult but worth it. It is a landlocked country and one of the poorest in the world - still burdened by political unrest due to a brutal history of colonialism. However, the global coffee community continues to be impressed by the country’s harvest and encouraged by the improvements specialty coffee can make in the lives of its producers. As such, JBIRD remains dedicated to discovering microlots like this one each year; those with the most character, unique flavor profiles, and plenty of that structured yet sparkly acidity we’ve come to expect from Burundi coffee.
